1. Summary
Please briefly summarise the initial situation of your part of the project, your planned activities
and the results you are achieving by the implementation of the project. (2.500 characters)
The English Garden in Tata is a popular resting place for the residents of Tata, in addition to being an
important destination for tourists who like nature and interested in historical features. The first English
garden of the country was commissioned by Count Ferenc Esterházy in 1783. The Small Castle near
Cseke Lake in Tata used to serve as a summer retreat for the family. The park features several ele-
ments to enhance its romantic character, such as small bridges, pavilions, a cascade, winding path-
ways and merely its lakeside location. The two stone griffins at the entrance were made by sculptor
Antal Schweiger. The fully restored Palmhouse serves as an event centre today but in the early 20th
century also it functioned as a prestigious entertainment facility for locals and visitors. The earliest
building in the park is the Late Baroque style Small Castle built to serve as a summer retreat of the Es-
terhazy family. 3 phases of rehabilitaion of the English Garden in Tata were implemented, in this pro-
jects we target the restoration of historical monuments that can be found in the park and associated
with the Esterhazy heritage. These are the following: 1) winged griffins at the entrance of the park -
There were many statues in the gardeen, however, the winged griffins standing next to the main gate
of the garden, which were moved to their current location in 1801 are of unique importance. The two
stone griffins embody the authority of the Esterhazy family and preserve the tranquility of the garden.
They were made by Antal Schweiger, the creator of several public sculptures in Tata. 2) ruin folly - in
the northern part resembles a 3-nave church designed by renowned French architect Charles Moreau
in 1801. The Roman bath character of the building was proposed by the Esterhazy family and during
the times of King Matias Corvinus, a bath was in this place filled by karst spring. 3) The octagonal
Turkish mosque folly was built in 1840, allegedly on the site of a Turkish hermit's hut. The bench
nearby named after Ferenc Kazinczy commemorates the visits that the renowned author paid to the
park. 4) Restoration of Saint John of Nepomuk statue and the bridge, 5) Restoration of Néppark entry
to the English Garden of Tata.

The English garden of Tata was commissioned by Count Ferenc Esterházy in 1783. The Small Castle
near Cseke Lake in Tata used to serve as a summer retreat for the family. Besides design, its roman-
tic character is further enhanced by ruin follies, ponds and a Turkish mosque. The park covers 23 hec-
tars. What made the garden in Tata extraordinary was not only its innovative shape but also its one-
time extension over the whole town. In the 2010s, the garden and its buildings were restored nearly to
its original state according to a layout plan from 1823.
Local needs and challenges

Cross border character

operation between the partners during and after implementation. Please describe the similar or
common challenges the partners are dealing with. (max. 1500 characters)
Želiezovce, Galanta and Tata laid down the foundations of cooperation in 2021. The aim of this co-
operation is to preserve the legacy of the Esterhazy family in Slovakia and Hungary. Tata and Galanta
had already made steps towards cooperation, but no joint project with participation of towns was de-
veloped. The recognition of Esterhazy family is significantly lower in terms of cultural and economic
development the family contributed to in Tata, Galanta, Želiezovce and Vámosmikola (ASP). The
goals of the project would like to fill this gap. The local communities have little or no information about
the activities of Esterhazy family in Slovakia and Hungary contributing to development of the region.
We would like to ensure that the local communities receive adequate information about the legacy of
the Esterhazy family. Furthermore, we would like to exploit the tourism potential of the Esterhazy her-
itage connecting the towns of Želiezovce,Tata and Galanta along the history of the family and family
mansions strengthening the cross-border character of the project.
